Pakistani currency has a rich timeline and all these years changes have been made for the convenience of public and to strengthen the economy. Until 1971, Pakistani currency was printed in two languages i.e. Bengali and Urdu. 'Paisa' coins were used till 80s that were discontinued and replaced by notes which again got discontinued and replaced by new coins. Here is history and some of the interesting facts about Pakistani currency.
1) Word 'rupiya' is a Sanskrit word which means 'a coin of silver'
2) Concept of Coins that are used in Pakistan, begun thousands years ago in India
3) First coin with name 'Rupee' was introduced by Sher Shah Suri in 1545
4) The coins issued after 1840 bore the portrait of Queen Victoria
5) Acute shortage of silver during the First World War, led to the introduction of paper currency of One Rupee
6) A new "Anna Series" was introduced in 1940s
7) Hyderabad State had its own currency notes of Rs 1, Rs 2 and Rs 1,000
9) In 1948, coin of half rupee and one rupee were introduced
10) In 1962, coins for 1, 2, 5 and 10 paisa were issued
12) 2 Paisa Coins were ceased in 1976
13) 1 Paisa Coins were ceased in 1979
14) 5, 10, 25 and 50 Paisa coins were ceased in 1996
15) 1 Rupee coin was reintroduced in 1998
16) It has Quaid-e-Azam on front and Shrine of Shahbaz Qalander at back
17) 2 Rupee coin was introduced in 1998
18) It has Crescent and Star at front and Badshahi Masjid Lahore at back
19) 2 Rupee coin has two variations, with clouds and without clouds
20) 5 Rupee coin was introduced in 2002
21) The 1 and 2 rupee coins were changed to aluminium in 2007
22) Indian rupees with Pakistani stamp were used earlier as currency in 1947
23) 2, 5, 10 and 100 rupees notes were introduced in 1953
24) 50 rupee note was introduced in 1957
25) And it used to have two languages, Bangali and Urdu both
27) It was reintroduced in 1986
28) 2 Rupee Notes were re-introduced in 1985
29) 2 Rupee Notes were replaced by Coins in 1998
32) And were discontinued in 2012 and replaced by coins
33) 5,000 rupee was introduced in 2006
34) It has been rumored that government might issue Rs. 10,000 in 2016
